Essential Preparations for the Launch of Baldur’s Gate 3: Clearing the Way for an Epic Adventure!

Many of you have been immersed in Baldur’s Gate 3 since the beginning of Early Access back in 2020. Along the way, you might have accumulated a backlog of old save games or even experimented with a few mods. Whether you're a seasoned player or a newcomer, there are essential steps you should take to ensure a seamless experience as you embark on your adventure.

To guarantee a smooth journey ahead, we strongly advise you to follow these guidelines before venturing forth:

Erase your in-game Early Access Saves

While we've worked to ensure a seamless transition to the launch version of BG3, it's best to delete your in-game Early Access save files if you still have access to the Early Access version. Your Early Access saves and player profiles won't be compatible with the release version of Baldur’s Gate 3. Leaving them in your save folders might lead to issues in some cases. Note: simply deleting the game’s save folder may create conflicts when either Steam Cloud or Larian Cloud re-downloads the save files.

To do this, follow these steps:

Open Baldur’s Gate 3.

On the main menu, click Load Game.

Go through old campaigns and select Delete Campaign.

This method will ensure your saves are removed both from your computer and the cloud.

We understand parting with your saves can be tough. If you want to back them up before removing them from the cloud, move them from '%LocalAppData%\Larian Studios' to another location for safekeeping.

Uninstall the Early Access version

Having the Early Access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 installed won't speed up your download of the full game and could potentially impact your installation of the final version. Since pre-loads aren't available due to the game being in Early Access, they could conflict with existing Early Access saves.

To uninstall, follow these steps in the Steam client:

Open your Steam Library.

Right-click Baldur’s Gate 3.

From the menu that appears, select Manage -> Uninstall.

Remove your Mods

Existing mods won't be compatible with the release version of Baldur’s Gate 3 and may cause issues or break the game unexpectedly. After uninstalling the game, check your Baldur’s Gate 3 installation folder and your AppData folder for any lingering mod folders. If you use a mod installer like the Vortex Mod Manager from Nexus, make sure to uninstall the mods from the mod manager to prevent them from automatically re-downloading. For mod-related troubleshooting, refer to our Mod Information support page.

Install BG3 on an SSD

We highly recommend installing Baldur’s Gate 3 on a solid-state drive (SSD) for optimal performance. Ensure you have enough space on the drive for smooth gameplay.

Update your graphics card drivers

Keep your graphics card drivers up-to-date to enhance compatibility and performance while playing the game.

Consult the launch FAQ

If you encounter any issues when launching BG3 after the switch to the final version of the game on August 3rd, we'll provide an FAQ accessible from the launcher. It will address potential problems and their solutions.

For any other issues, our support teams will be delighted to assist you. We genuinely hope you have a fantastic time with the final version of Baldur’s Gate 3!
