In "Challengers," Zendaya portrays the character of Tashi, a professional tennis player. The story revolves around Tashi and her husband, Art, played by Mike Faist, as they reconnect with a former rival named Patrick, portrayed by Josh O'Connor. Interestingly, Patrick also happens to be Tashi's former lover and best friend. Tashi convinces Art to participate in the Challengers tennis tournament, but things become complicated when Art discovers that he will be competing against Patrick. As a result, drama and fierce competition ensue both on and off the court.
According to the film's official logline, "Challengers" explores the lives of three players who have known each other since their teenage years. As they compete in a prestigious tennis tournament to become the world-famous grand slam winner, old rivalries are reignited, leading to intense confrontations and emotional moments.
Luca Guadagnino, known for his acclaimed works such as "Call Me by Your Name" and "Suspiria," revealed that Zendaya dedicated three months to train with pro tennis coach and former player Brad Gilbert for her role in the film. Gilbert not only trained Zendaya but also served as a consultant for the movie. Guadagnino collaborated with screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and enlisted Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, known for their work on "Bones and All," to compose the film's score.
"Challengers" boasts an impressive production team, with Amy Pascal, the producer of "Spider-Man: No Way Home," serving as one of the film's producers alongside Guadagnino. Executive producers Bernard Bellew and Kevin Ulrich complete the team behind this highly anticipated project.
As an MGM production, "Challengers" is scheduled to premiere in theaters this September. The release of the film's first official trailer has already generated buzz among fans and critics alike, who are eagerly awaiting the release of this unique blend of romance, sports, and comedy.
