Resignation of Luis Rubiales: Spanish Football Federation President Steps Down Amid Controversy

Luis Rubiales has officially announced his resignation. The 46-year-old former professional football player and football official has stepped down from his role as the president of the Spanish Football Federation. This decision comes in the wake of criticism he faced for kissing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso without her consent following the Women's World Cup final, as reported by the BBC.

The 33-year-old player, Jenni Hermoso, has voiced her concerns about the non-consensual kiss, which occurred during the presentation ceremony after Spain's victory over England in Sydney. She has taken legal action by filing a complaint.

In his statement regarding his resignation, Luis Rubiales stated, "I cannot continue in my role." He made this announcement during an appearance on "Piers Morgan Uncensored." Furthermore, he confirmed that he has submitted his resignation to the acting president of the federation, Pedro Rocha. Additionally, he has resigned from his position as Vice President of UEFA's executive committee.

Spanish state prosecutors have pressed charges against Luis Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion related to the incident. They have presented a case against him in Spain's National Court in Madrid. Under a sexual consent law passed the previous year, if found guilty of sexual assault, he could potentially face a fine or a prison sentence ranging from one to four years.

Spain secured victory by defeating England's Lionesses to claim the Women's Soccer World Cup title on August 20 in Melbourne, Australia.
